Austria/Italy (2014) / Carnic Alps

High Route Carnic Alps/ Sent. della Pace, Section of the Long Distance Hiking Trail E03: Second part of the Alps crossing, this time hiking further south between Austria and Italy. How fantastic that boundaries are open! Very often, multiple times a day I change the country. This wasn’t always like this. The high route follows the old front of the Frist World War. Remains of it can be discovered everywhere. The idea how people confronted here in a hostile way and died, is unimaginable. So the name “Way of Peace” bears a great hope. During the first days I do not see many other hikers, in exchange I am warned of bears, but do not meet any. The last 4 days there are increasingly more people are on their way, respectively the huts are full. Mainly the paths follows the crest even though the level varies enormously.
In total 10 trekking days, ca. 1000 metres difference in altitude per day, max altitude 3000m, easy rucksack, no travel guide.

Conclusion: Necessarily take the true beginning of the High Route, lonely alps, friendly people. Worthy finale of my hiking summer in the Alps.
